How our community team walks alongside whānau every day
When people think of hospice care, many imagine a building. But at Hospice Whanganui, most of our work happens out in the community – in homes, aged-care facilities, and rural areas across our rohe. Every day, our nurses, Health Care Associates (HCAs), and whānau support team travel wherever they’re needed.
Every Road Leads to Whānau
Our community team covers Whanganui and the wider region, from the city to rural communities, working closely with GPs, district nurses, and other health providers to make sure patients receive seamless, coordinated care.
“We go where whānau need us, that’s what hospice care looks like here.” – Caron Purchase, Hospice Whanganui Nurse
Each visit might look a little different: checking in on pain management, helping with equipment, offering a listening ear, or supporting carers who just need a moment to breathe.
Teamwork in Motion
Hospice Whanganui’s nurse-led model means every visit is part of a wider web of care. Nurses coordinate with our HCAs, social workers, counsellors, and volunteers to ensure patients and whānau feel supported physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
- Nurses lead the planning and care coordination.
- HCAs provide hands-on care and comfort.
- Whānau Support helps with emotional, practical, and spiritual needs.
- Volunteers offer small acts of kindness that make a big difference.
The Heart of Home Care
Being able to stay in familiar surroundings, surrounded by loved ones, is something most people hope for – and our team helps make that possible. From early morning visits to after-hours phone calls, the focus is always on dignity, comfort, and choice.
“It’s not about buildings or beds – it’s about people, connection, and aroha.” – Sue Hartendorp, Hospice Whanganui Health Care Assistant
💛 Wherever our team goes, one thing never changes – the commitment to walking alongside patients and whānau with compassion and respect.
