Hospice provides a range of courses for registered and non-registered health and social services professionals. Below is a brief summary of our courses, but we encourage you to please get in touch with us with any questions. We’d love to see you at one of our trainings!
Palliative Care for Caregivers – $60 pp
This full-day course is specifically designed for professionals working with whānau in health settings, whether this is in the home, aged residential care facilities, or hospital settings. Course content includes:
- Principles of Palliative Care
- Understanding Pain and other common symptoms
- Communicating with and supporting the dying person and their whānau
- Caring in the last days of life
- Understanding loss and grief
Syringe Driver Competency – $40 pp
For registered and enrolled nurses on the purpose of a syringe driver and how to prepare, administer and monitor the driver. Online modules must be completed, via Ko Awatea, before undertaking the practical training component. Course content includes:
- Theoretical and practical skills required for Registered Nurses to manage syringe drivers
- For Enrolled Nurses to be competent in second-checking
Palliative Care Partnership – No Cost
This full-day course is designed for General Practitioners, Registered Nurses, and Nurse Practitioners working in general practice. Through education, discussion, and shared learning, participants will gain practical knowledge to support people receiving palliative care and strengthen connections between primary care services and Hospice Whanganui. Course content includes:
- Symptom management and palliative care emergencies
- Communication with patients and whānau
- Cultural, emotional, spiritual, and ethical considerations
- Recognising when a person is dying
- Hospice Whanganui services, referral pathways, and working alongside community partners including St John Ambulance
