What Does Hospice Care Include?

Hospice care is often misunderstood. Some people think it’s only for the very last days of life. At Hospice Whanganui, we know it’s much more than that. Hospice care is about living as fully and comfortably as possible, with dignity, choice, and aroha – for both patients and whānau.

What Hospice Care Looks Like

Hospice care is a type of specialist palliative care. It focuses on managing symptoms like pain, breathlessness, fatigue, or nausea, so people can spend less time worrying about illness and more time on the things that matter most.

We provide this care in two main places:

  • At home – most of our patients are supported where they feel most comfortable. Our nurses and Health Care Associates (HCAs) visit regularly, working closely with GPs, pharmacies, aged residential care, and other providers.
  • In our inpatient unit – when extra support is needed, our peaceful unit provides short-term care, with space for whānau to stay close.

Support Beyond the Physical

Illness touches every part of life. That’s why our care also includes:

  • Emotional support – for both patients and whānau, helping people navigate feelings, decisions, and practical challenges.
  • Spiritual care – wairua (spirit) is central to wellbeing. Our team supports people of all cultures and beliefs.
  • Whānau support – information, carer wellness programmes, hui, and bereavement support long after a loved one has died.

“We thought hospice was just about the last few days. Instead, they walked alongside us for months, helping Dad live the way he wanted.”

– Whānau member (shared with consent)

Practical Help

Hospice care also includes practical supports that make everyday life easier:

  • Equipment such as hospital beds or walkers
  • Personal cares at home (showering, mobility support)
  • Nutrition support
  • Assistance with legal/financial matters like Wills or Enduring Power of Attorney
  • Guidance on funeral planning or advanced care plans
  • Links to community services and supported living

A Holistic Approach

Our care is guided by Te Whare Tapa Whā – the four cornerstones of health:

  • Tinana – physical health
  • Hinengaro – emotional health
  • Wairua – spiritual wellbeing
  • Whānau – social/family connections

This ensures we walk alongside the whole person, not just the illness.
