At times, the whānau and friends who provide care to a person with a life-limiting illness may just need a little break to recharge their batteries or to take care of themselves. We are here to support whānau to do just that.
What to Expect from Hospice’s Respite Service
It is important that you take care of yourself, and to build your resilience as you care for your loved one. Hospice provides short-term respite services to patients and their whānau, either in their own homes, or in our beautiful and peaceful in-patient facility. We encourage you to talk with any one of our team if you would like to consider some respite.
- A hospice care assistant coming to your home to look after your loved one for a few hours while you take a break, go for a walk, run some errands or visit some friends
- A short 2-night stay for the patient in our beautiful 4-bed facility so that whānau can get a break. We offer this service during the 3rd week of every month
- Your loved one spending a day or a few hours here at our beautiful, peaceful facility being looked after by our staff while you have a break at home

When You Need a Break
It is 100% okay to want or need a break from caring for someone with a life-limiting illness, even when you love them deeply. At times, caring for the physical and emotional needs of a person with a life-limiting illness can be tiring and emotionally demanding and this is very normal. Asking for help or taking a break is not a failure, it is a courageous and positive step that you can take to keep your energy levels up and to do some of the things you loved to do and that fill up your tank.
