Dying Reviews:

Listening at the End of Life

Dying Reviews is a national initiative sharing honest experiences of dying, caring, and grief – reminding us why compassionate, whānau-centred care matters.

Hospice NZ has released the first 500 Dying Reviews – a powerful collection of real experiences shared by people who are dying, caring for someone at the end of life, or grieving the loss of a loved one.

These reviews shine a light on what compassionate, respectful end-of-life care can look like, and where systems, services, or communication have fallen short when people needed care the most.

Dying Reviews is a national initiative designed to help organisations, workplaces, and community services better understand the lived realities of end-of-life experiences. By listening to these voices, the project aims to drive meaningful improvements in how people are supported during life’s final chapter.

At Hospice Whanganui, we know that how people are treated at the end of life matters deeply. Every experience shared through Dying Reviews is a reminder that care must always be grounded in dignity, choice, compassion, and respect for both patients and their whānau.

We encourage our community, local organisations, and service providers to take time to read these stories and reflect on how greater understanding and empathy can shape better care – not just in healthcare, but across all areas of life.
