When people hear “hospice,” they often think of one thing: the very last days of life. But hospice care is so much more. At Hospice Whanganui, we see every day how myths and misunderstandings can stop people from reaching out for support earlier. Let’s set the record straight.
Myth 1: Hospice is only for the last few days
❌ Not true. Hospice care can begin months before the final stage of life.
✅ Our team supports patients and whānau from the time of diagnosis of a life-limiting condition, helping people live well for as long as possible.
Myth 2: Hospice means giving up
❌ Choosing hospice doesn’t mean giving up hope.
✅ It means focusing on comfort, dignity, and what matters most. Many patients still receive treatments while under hospice care.
Myth 3: Hospice is only for patients – not families
❌ Hospice care doesn’t stop at the patient.
✅ We provide whānau support, bereavement care, emotional and spiritual support, and practical advice for carers.
Myth 4: Hospice care is only in a building
❌ Most hospice care doesn’t happen in our inpatient unit.
✅ The majority of patients are supported at home or in the place they feel most comfortable.
Myth 5: Hospice isn’t available to everyone
❌ Hospice Whanganui’s services are free of charge and available to all who need them.
✅ Thanks to the generosity of our community, funders, and donors, we’ve been providing free care since 1981.
💛 Hospice care is about life, not just the end. By busting these myths, we hope more people feel comfortable reaching out earlier.
