Inpatient Care

All the hospice rooms look out on to our beautiful gardens.

At Hospice Whanganui we have five beds in our inpatient facility. Four of these are dedicated to patients requiring symptom control and the fifth is for respite care. Admissions to the Hospice inpatient unit average seven-to-ten days, although when someone has complex symptoms the length of stay can be longer if needed. The inpatient admission gives the multidisciplinary Hospice team the opportunity to work with the patient to ensure that they are as well as is possible for them to be, and that any potentially distressing symptoms are controlled.

While in the inpatient unit, patients and families are encouraged to treat it as their own home. We have no fixed visiting hours and those close to the patient often stay for extended periods. The unit is very pleasant with access to kitchen, bathroom and lounge facilities. All rooms have direct access to a small outdoor patio and to our extensive gardens. Wireless internet is available free of charge, as is access to all other Hospice services.

Sometimes patients pass away in the inpatient unit but mostly they return to their homes, feeling better than when they came in.
