'Abbotsford' fundraiser for Hospice

A Hospice lunch was held on Tuesday 17th July 2018 in the elegant ‘Abbotsford’ at 37 Suther Street, Waverley. Organizer Catherine Koubaridis has seen first-hand how wonderful the Hospice facility is in Wanganui and wanted to do something to help raise money & awareness. Raising money for hospice is so important to help keep this amazing facility available in our area. $880.00 was raised by 30 people that bought tickets to the lunch.
Catherine & family members want to thank the generous people that helped make the day such a success

Vicki Koubaridis, Catherine’s daughter inlaw is the President of the Waverley & Districts Maternity Home Services  “Abbotsford” & is very keen to see this cherished old Home used more, so it was the perfect place for the fundraiser lunch. The fascinating history of Abbotsford has always had health as its paramount concern, so it felt so right to have it there. It was built in 1912 by midwife, Mrs Janet Edwards, after her previous Nursing Home burnt down. She was incredibly hardworking and had 15 children herself, though not all survived childhood. When she retired in 1943, the Home was brought by the Waverley Citizens Committee and continued to be run as a Nursing Home until it closed in 1986.
The various rooms at Abbotsford are currently used by several organisations such as, Waverley Standby, the District Health Nurses, and Podiatrist Leo Brown and Rachel Cunningham, but there is a lot more room available for use. This spacious building can be hired for meetings, co working space, High Teas, Art displays, events of any kind really, and there are beautiful gardens surrounding it. The exterior has been recently painted to a very high standard by Grant Sanson.
There is a disabled bathroom and shower for public to use, especially for people who may need it after having an operation or accident that means their home bathroom isn’t suitable. There is also lots of equipment for hire; crutches, wheel chair, walkers to name a few, a small donation is requested for hirage.
Abbotsford is a Charitable Trust and administered by a dedicated committee: Vicki Koubaridis, Meryl Woodill, Karley Amon, Margaret Bektayev, Ursula Cunningham, Marianne Archibald, Maria Harris, Maree Hawken, Margaret Kiff, Catherine Koubaridis, Sally Train, Letitia Bradnock & Maria Ferris. Vicki & her committee would love more people to become members for a small fee of $5.00 per year. This goes towards the cost of running such a wonderful facility, a facility which is owned by everyone in our community. Any ideas to help raise awareness and raise money to upkeep this non-profit organisation in our community are very welcome. They are looking at running other events later in the year, which will be well advertised in advance.
